Policies and Procedures
2015-2016
Philosophy
As a
mother of four, a graduate of BYU in Elementary Education, and a former first
grade teacher, I believe that every
child is bright, and learning can and should be fun. I have a hands-on,
engaging approach in the classroom, adapting the curriculum for all learning
styles using Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence approach. Sprouts Preschool has a strong academic
curriculum without losing the excitement of exploring and creating that
preschoolers are so good at! I am licensed with the City of Idaho Falls, to maintain this licensure I have a fire inspection, health inspection, CPR/First Aid training, and must do professional development yearly. I will be teaching two sessions this year on Tuesdays and Thursdays, both sessions run for 2 hours and 15 minutes. The classes will be for 4 year-old children. I have a very small class size, 7 students, where your child will get lots of one-on-one attention, which is hard to come by in many preschools.
CURRICULUM
Overview –
The curriculum at Sprouts Preschool will
be based around engaging thematic units (i.e. zoo animals), while using the
Multiple Intelligence approach, providing activities and experiences that
address all the ways children are “smart”.
These different intelligences include spatial, interpersonal,
naturalist, logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, linguistic, and
intrapersonal. The curriculum teaches a
new letter each week. Generally, on
Tuesdays I will introduce the letter and we will practice writing the letter
and do activities related to the letter.
On Thursdays we will review the letter, and the students will bring their ABC Bag (provided) and share an item that begins with the letter and do
more activities to reinforce the letter name/sound. I use Zoo Phonics to teach the letters and teach a song to go with each letter.
I will utilize hands-on activities, games,
arts & crafts, stories, songs, and dramatic play to teach life skills and
pre-K readiness skills. My goal is to teach the whole child by interconnecting
cognitive, emotional, and social experiences into a cohesive preschool experience. The focus will be on EXPORATION, and GROWTH
at Sprouts Preschool.
Content –
The curriculum is comprised of 3 areas:
· School Fundamentals
Children will practice all the
necessary fundamentals to give them confidence and a head start for
kindergarten, such as writing their name and knowing their letters, letter
sounds, numbers, counting, shapes and colors among other things.
· Social Skills
Children will learn and practice life
skills that will help them be successful in the classroom and in life such as;
being kind, sharing, taking turns, raising your hand to speak in class,
following rules, public speaking, and working together.
· Interesting Subject Areas
Children will learn math, science,
social studies, music, and art by learning about the exciting world around them
with weekly themes and by exploration in the discovery centers.

Centers
The children
will be divided up and rotate centers.
Each child will have a turn at each center. I will mostly be working at the writing
center helping with the skills being practiced there, but will also monitor the
other centers to help with problem solving and 1-1 instruction.
Writing Center: Children will practice writing letters at this center, I will use a variety of methods to teach writing; sensory bins, hands-on activities, letter crafts, paper/pencil worksheets/booklets. Students will also practice letter sounds and reading in a one-on-one setting.
Discovery Centers: At these centers there will be fun, engaging activities
that help develop fine/gross motor skills while further exploring the theme of
the week.
Academic Centers: Children will explore letters, numbers, the world, time,
money and more with games, manipulatives, letter tiles, puzzles, and more.
Snacks/Potty Break
Hand Washing: We always wash hands when we arrive at preschool, and clean-up before snack.
Snack Time: Snack time is a wonderful social time for children as they
relax and talk about matters that are important to them. Each family will provide 3 boxes of snacks at the beginning of the year, I will supplement the snack time with fresh items such as fruit and vegetables.
Lesson
We will
further learn about the theme by singing songs, reading and discussing a book,
and playing a game together about the topic.
Craft/Science Experiment
Depending on the lesson we will either
do a craft or a science experiment/experience.
Pretend Play
A child's work is play. They
learn several things through their play, like how to express their feelings, how
to help others, how things can be acted upon, etc.

Closures –
Teacher Illness –
If I must close the preschool due to
sickness or family reason, I allow myself up to 1 missed preschool day without
refunding your tuition –or- making up the sick day. Otherwise, I will try to find a substitute.
However, if I close the preschool for 2+ days for sickness or family reasons, I
will gladly refund everyone’s tuition at a prorated amount per missed school
day, or schedule a make-up day.
If a child is absent due to illness
tuition is still due as agreed upon.
Please notify me by phone, text or email if your child will be absent so
I will not expect them.
Enrollment –
Enrollment is based on a first-come,
first-serve basis. All parents are encouraged to pre-enroll their
children. When you enroll your child, a non-refundable registration fee
of $65.00 will be charged to secure a spot in Sprouts Preschool. That money will be
used to help purchase classroom supplies, and pay for fieldtrips and other
special events.
Non-Discrimination –
Sprouts Preschool is available to all
children without regard to race, sex, or national origin.
Withdrawal –
Life happens, and circumstances
change. In the event something happens to
your family (i.e. moving) and you need to withdraw your child for the remainder
of the school year, 30 days written notice is required, along with the full
tuition paid during those 30 days. If thirty days’ notice is not given,
the following month’s tuition is due. If you withdraw before the first
day of preschool, you forfeit your registration fee and 50% of any tuition
paid.
Termination –
I reserve the right to immediately
terminate enrollment for reasons including, but not limited to, the following:
·
Late or non-payment of tuition
·
Parent adopts an adversarial role with any member of Sprouts Preschool or the
families it serves
·
Enrolled child hurts, endangers or causes the suffering of any other student
·
Parent behaves inappropriately in the school environment or on school
grounds. This includes, but is not limited to language and actions that
are vulgar, abusive, dangerous or sexually suggestive.
Termination for these reasons does not
entitle family to reimbursement of any monies paid.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition –
When you enroll you enter into a
9-month contract with Sprouts Preschool for the full session. You also
agree to pay the full session’s tuition, payable in 9 monthly payments. The
first payment is due Sept. 1st 2015 with each payment due thereafter by the 1st
of each month, or the first preschool day of each month. The last payment is due May 1st 2016.
Rate:
$65/mo. and one time $65 registration fee (for supplies).
Payment Procedures –
I accept cash, or checks made payable
to Karri Sloan. Any returned check is subject to a $20 charge.
Fees –
Late Payment: A $10 late fee will be charged on any
payments received after the 10th. If tuition has not been
received by the 30th, your child will no longer be enrolled in Sprouts
Preschool. If there are extenuating circumstances regarding your finances,
please contact me to discuss how they might impact your tuition.
Late Pickup: You should be prompt when picking up
your child from preschool. You will be given a one-time late pick
up. Each additional late pick up (10+ minutes after school is out) will
result in a $5 late pickup fee. Please call if you are running late, so I
can let your child know you are on your way.
Refunds –
Enrolling your child reserves a space
for that child. Tuition is due whether or not your child attends.
No credit or refund is given for your child’s sick days or vacation.
Things to Know
Clothing –
We will be doing lots of hands on
crafts, and science experiments. We will
get messy. I will do my part by encouraging
the students to be tidy, and by providing a painting apron. But, please don’t send your child in their nicest
clothes. I would hate if a student
ruined their best sweater at preschool.
Please dress your child in clothing
suitable for the weather, as well as outdoor play clothing like jackets, coats,
gloves or hats. We will be going outside
often when weather permits.
I prefer if students wear shoes that do
not need to be tied to help expedite the arrival/departure time.
When weather permits we will play for a time outside. I believe outside play is an essential part of growing and learning. It helps develop gross motor skills, and the students get to interact in a free, fun way that is so healthy for their growth.
What to Bring –
On the first preschool day of each
week, we will have “Sharing Time.” Please let your child bring something
that starts with the Letter of the week in their ABC Bag (provided).
Please do not send anything fragile or irreplaceable, as Sprouts Preschool
cannot be held responsible if it breaks or is lost.
All other days, we request that toys
and personal items stay at home. You may want to send a backpack with
your child, but it is not necessary.
Snacks –
I will ask for snacks at the beginning of the year, 3 boxes per child. And, as needed when I run out. I will supplement once in a while with juice/milk/or fresh healthy snacks. Please bring store
bought snacks. I personally love home-made snacks but to insure food safety I
must have this policy.
Open Door Policy –
We have an open-door policy, meaning
you are welcome to visit your preschooler at any time during his/her
class. If you
have something you would like to discuss please email or call me, because it is
hard for me to truly listen while caring for the preschoolers.
Arrival and Departure
Arrival –
Children should arrive promptly at 9/12. I will wait in the entryway of my home for a few minutes, after which I will
escort the students to the basement. If
you arrive after 9:05 please bring your child down to the basement to insure
they arrive safely, I know they have arrived, and they are not wandering around
the house.
Departure –
Parents/guardians should arrive promptly
at 11:15/2:15 . to pick up their preschooler.
I will be at the door with your child.
Please walk up to house to retrieve your child and walk on the sidewalk
back to your car. To make sure no one
gets hurt during this routine please be an example of safe practices when
dropping off/picking up your child (looking for cars, walking on sidewalk, etc...)
Child Release –
Only adults authorized on the Registration Form will be allowed to take your child home. Please let me know
if someone other than parent/guardian will pick up your child. If an emergency arises and you need to send
someone not listed on the enrollment form, you must call to notify me, the person
you have designated will need to show proof of identification.
SPECIAL
OCCASIONS
Birthdays –
You may bring birthday treats if you
want to.
On your child’s birthday we will designate it “(Child’s Name) Day,” sing him/her
the birthday song, they will get to wear a special birthday hat, take home a "birthday book", and I will give him/her a small birthday present from the class.
Special Activities:
Throughout the year we will have a few
days in which we break our traditional schedule and have a special day such as
a fieldtrip, or a fun activity at school.
Some possible activities are fieldtrips to the zoo, pumpkin patch, a Christmas program, a Transportation Parade, Nature Walk, a Paleontologist Dinosaur
Dig, and a Play the students will perform for their parents.
Important Occasions –
First Day Orientation-Sept. 1st
Fieldtrips TBA
Maintaining a Healthy School
Cleanliness Methods –
In an effort to reduce the spread of
germs, teachers and children wash their hands upon entering the preschool,
after using the bathroom and before eating and food preparation. Hygiene,
such as coughing into the bent elbow, wiping the nose with a tissue, and not
sharing cups, are continually discussed. Tables and other surfaces, sinks
and toilets are disinfected daily. Floors are swept/vacuumed on a daily
basis. Toys are cleaned weekly.
Illnesses –
Please keep your child home when he or
she is sick to prevent the spread of germs to other children. If in
doubt, it is best to keep your child at home. When your child is sick, please
call by 8:45/11:45 to let me know he or she will not be attending that day. If
a child becomes ill during the day, he or she will be separated from the group
and made comfortable while a parent/guardian is notified to pick him up.
The law requires that children
exhibiting any of the following symptoms (in the last 24 hours) be excluded
from school:
§
Strep throat, fever and has been on antibiotics for less than 24 hours
§
Diarrhea
§
Vomiting
§
Draining rash
§
Eye discharge or Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
§
Fever of 101F or greater
§
Lice or nits in the hair
POTTY TRAINING
Potty Policy –
I do not require a preschooler
to be potty trained before coming to preschool.
But, please always have your child go potty before coming to
preschool, if they are being potty trained or already potty trained. If they are potty
training inform me and I will do my best to aid in this process by being aware of body language and giving reminders. I will not change diapers or pull-ups at
preschool. But, I do not discourage you
sending your child in one if they need them.
Accidents –
If a child soils their diaper/pull-up
I will call you and we will discuss if you come and change them or if you give
me permission to change them. If a child
has an accident while at preschool (in underwear) they will change into a
second pair of clothing that you provide (please keep this second change of
clothing in their backpack).
SAFETY
Emergency & Accident Procedures –
I stress safety and children are
supervised closely at all times. Materials, furniture and equipment are
checked weekly to be sure they are in safe, working order. Medications,
cleaning supplies and other harmful substances and objects are kept out of the
children's reach.
I have been trained in CPR and First
Aid. In the event of a minor injury, I will administer First Aid.
In the event of a medical emergency, 911 will be called. Parents will
also be contacted as soon as possible in the event of any illness or injury
requiring immediate medical assistance.
BEHAVIOR & DISCIPLINE
Behavioral Expectations –
I expect that you and I will work
together to teach the children kindness, care, respect and trust. I do
not allow any fighting, kicking, pushing, biting, name-calling, physical
aggression or exclusion at preschool.
Discipline –
If a problem occurs, I will follow the
following procedure; redirect, speak with child individually, and give alternative
choices. If a child is unable or unwilling to
demonstrate self-control, a brief “time out” will be given to help the child regain
control. This happens only as a last resort. I am a believer in love and logic, that by
giving choices to the students empowers them.
I believe positive reinforcement and interaction can stop many behavioral
and management issues.
Removal From Class –
Children are learning appropriate behaviors
for the classroom and life, and in the learning process they will make
mistakes. My hope is that with the
support of the parents we may solve any reoccurring behavioral problem. But, in the rare case that progress is not
made I reserve the right to remove a child from my rolls. A child may be dismissed from our preschool
if one or more of the following conditions are repeatedly observed:
§
A child is aggressive towards others
§
A child intentionally destroys property
§
A child’s behavior is unruly, disruptive, and prevents others from fully
participating in or benefitting from class activities.
COMMUNICATION
Newsletter –
I will keep parents informed of their
children’s daily activities in several ways. Most of the products that
are produced (paintings, writing, and arts & crafts) are sent home the day
they are created. However, many of our experiences produce no final product.
We play games, finger write letters in boxes of sand, act out stories, do
puppets, play musical instruments and build with blocks.
I will send out email messages of the newsletter. Occasionally, I will send out
emails including noteworthy activities and pictures. If you do not want your child’s picture
shared on these group emails please inform me on the registration packet.
Contact Information
For registration forms call or email me and I will send them to you. To reserve your place at Sprouts preschool return your registration forms and the registration fee of $65 as soon as possible.
